Can Am Maverick Top Speed

Can Am Maverick Top Speed

When people ask us, “what’s the the top speed of a Can-Am Maverick?” we have to say that the answer depends on a number of different variables.

Most importantly, the Can-Am Maverick is a series with several vehicles, each of which has its own top speed. The top speed can also depend on size. A Can-Am Maverick X3 with two seats won’t have the same top speed as a Can-Am Maverick X3 with four seats.

Plus, the Can-Am Maverick has been out for many years, and some models from some years are faster than others.

Starting to see how complex the answer could be?

To simplify things, we did some of our own thorough research to find out more about the top speed of the different types of Can-Am Maverick vehicles!

Overview and Top Speed of the Can Am Maverick Series

Top Speed of the 2024 Can-Am Maverick Turbo RR

According to Can-Am, the 2024 Can-Am Maverick Turbo RR is said to be able to reach speeds of up to 62 miles per hour on the right terrain.

On a flat surface, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.49 seconds.

The Turbo RR comes complete with a 240-horsepower turbocharged engine, a high-performance 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and anywhere from 18 to 20 inches of travel depending on the exact model.

It also features a Smart-Lok front differential and Intelligent Throttle Control.

Top Speed of the 2024 Can-Am Maverick X3 XMR

The Can-Am Maverick X3 XMR has about the same top speed as the Turbo RR, topping at just around 62 miles per hour. If you’re after pure speed, it might not do the job for you.

Though the stock XMR comes with 195 horsepower, the speed is limited due to its knobby tires and the onboard speed governor, which we’ll look at a bit later in the modifications section.

If you’re in the market for a side-by-side that handles mud well, look no further than the 'MR' series. It has been perfectly dialed for swampy trails, thanks to its massive tires, snorkels, and included winch.

Like its cousins above, the XMR Turbo RR model tops out at around 62 miles per hour (100 km/h).

Also, just to be clear, both the Can-Am Maverick X3 R and RR come equipped with speed and rev limiters to prevent excessive speeds.

Top Speed of the 2024 Can-Am Maverick R

Here’s where things start to get serious. The 2024 Can-Am Maverick R tops out at around 100 mph, which, for many people, is way too fast. In fact, it’s a bit of a crazy jump from the prior few models.

This is all thanks to its 240 horsepower, 999cc one-liter turbocharged engine, which comes equipped with a 54-millimeter turbo.

Beyond its speed capabilities, this side-by-side is actually pretty good on wild terrain, thanks to the 17” ground clearance and the 26” wheel travel. Of course, Can-Am also did a number on it in terms of tweaks and upgrades, including the engine, suspension, and steering.

It’s one of those vehicles that can pretty much conquer anything.

Top Speed of the 2024 Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo

Then, we have the base model, which is the Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo. Riders say they’re able to get up to around 85 miles per hour in this thing, thanks to the insane power and acceleration of the turbocharged Rotax ACE engine.

It’s become somewhat of an icon in the Can-Am community.

Lastly, we have the performance-centric 2024 Can-Am Maverick X3 X DS Turbo RR, which comes with an ultra-powerful turbocharged Rotax ACE engine that can spit out around 200 horsepower.

With everything accounted for, you can reach up to around 85 miles per hour in this thing, providing you with the slightest bit of extra oomph compared to some of the other models in this series.

Factors That Affect Top Speed

There are many factors that are going to affect the top speed of a side-by-side, including:

  • Engine Displacement: This is the size of your engine, which is measured in cubic centimeters (ccs). Higher ccs often result in higher power an engine can generate.
  • Gearing: With gearing, you can adjust your side-by-side’s torque and RPMs for optimal performance, depending on the type of terrain you’re on.
  • Tires: You might be surprised to learn just how big of an impact tires can have on your speed, as they determine grip and traction.
  • Terrain:For example, if you’re riding on soft mud or sand, it may slow your vehicle down. On the other hand, asphalt or hard-packed terrain allows for more speed.
  • Weight:While it might seem obvious, many drivers forget to calculate weight when determining their speed and acceleration. The heavier the driver and passengers or the more accessories onboard, the slower you’ll go.
  • Modifications:If you’ve modified your side-by-side with aftermarket parts, such as an air intake or exhaust, you may be able to get more power out of your engine. Just make sure to check your local regulations, as doing so isn’t legal everywhere.

Modifications and Upgrades for Enhanced Speed

Disconnect the Speed Sensor

If you have a stock Can-Am Maverick X3 XMR, you likely have an onboard speed sensor as well, which limits speed. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to disconnect. The downside is that once you disconnect it, the speedometer won’t display your top speed, though you can always use a third-party GPS device if you want a more exact look at your speeds.

Flash the ECU

You may be able to bring your Maverick to your local Can-Am dealership and have someone flash the ECU. In doing so, you can alter the ECU’s model number to a different, faster model, such as an XRS, to pass over factory-imposed limitations.

Just note that modifying your ECU can void your warranty and be incredibly dangerous if done improperly, so we really recommend leaving it to the pros.

Throw On Some Aftermarket Accessories

Lastly, you can add some aftermarket accessories for a bit of extra speed. For example, you might upgrade to a larger turbocharger or supercharger to increase the amount of air and fuel mixture entering the engine's cylinders, giving your Maverick a bit more power and torque.

You can also upgrade your exhaust system with a high-flow muffler or install a high-flow air filter.
